c95d1e53ed cs5535: drop the Geode-specific MFGPT/GPIO code
With generic modular drivers handling all of this stuff, the
geode-specific code can go away. The cs5535-gpio, cs5535-mfgpt, and
cs5535-clockevt drivers now handle this.

3c55494670 ALSA: cs5535audio: free OLPC quirks from reliance on MGEODE_LX cpu optimization
Previously, OLPC support for the mic extensions was only enabled in the
ALSA driver if CONFIG_OLPC and CONFIG_MGEODE_LX were both set. This was
because the old geode GPIO code was written in a manner that assumed
CONFIG_MGEODE_LX. With the new cs553x-gpio driver, this is no longer the
case; as such, we can drop the requirement on CONFIG_MGEODE_LX and instead
include a requirement on GPIOLIB.

We use the generic GPIO API rather than the cs553x-specific API.

c03cb3149d x86: Relegate CONFIG_PAT and CONFIG_MTRR configurability to EMBEDDED
MTRR and PAT support (which got added to CPUs over 10 years ago)
are no longer really optional in that more and more things are
depending on PAT just working, including various drivers and newer
versions of X. (to not even speak of MTRR)

Having this as a regular config option just no longer makes sense.

This patch relegates CONFIG_X86_PAT to the EMBEDDED category so
ultra-embedded can still disable it if they really need to.

9492587cf3 kcore: register text area in generic way
Some 64bit arch has special segment for mapping kernel text. It should be
entried to /proc/kcore in addtion to direct-linear-map, vmalloc area.
This patch unifies KCORE_TEXT entry scattered under x86 and ia64.

I'm not familiar with other archs (mips has its own even after this patch)
but range of [_stext ..._end) is a valid area of text and it's not in
direct-map area, defining CONFIG_ARCH_PROC_KCORE_TEXT is only a necessary
thing to do.

Note: I left mips as it is now.

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

4518e6a0c0 x86,percpu: use embedding for 64bit NUMA and page for 32bit NUMA
Embedding percpu first chunk allocator can now handle very sparse unit
mapping. Use embedding allocator instead of lpage for 64bit NUMA.
This removes extra TLB pressure and the need to do complex and fragile
dancing when changing page attributes.

For 32bit, using very sparse unit mapping isn't a good idea because
the vmalloc space is very constrained. 32bit NUMA machines aren't
exactly the focus of optimization and it isn't very clear whether
lpage performs better than page. Use page first chunk allocator for
32bit NUMAs.

As this leaves setup_pcpu_*() functions pretty much empty, fold them
into setup_per_cpu_areas().

04da8a43da perf_counter, x86: Fix/improve apic fallback
Johannes Stezenbach reported that his Pentium-M based
laptop does not have the local APIC enabled by default,
and hence perfcounters do not get initialized.

Add a fallback for this case: allow non-sampled counters
and return with an error on sampled counters. This allows
'perf stat' to work out of box - and allows 'perf top'
and 'perf record' to fall back on a hrtimer based sampling
method.

( Passing 'lapic' on the boot line will allow hardware
sampling to occur - but if the APIC is disabled
permanently by the hardware then this fallback still
allows more systems to use perfcounters. )

Also decouple perfcounter support from X86_LOCAL_APIC.

e74e396204 percpu: use dynamic percpu allocator as the default percpu allocator
This patch makes most !CONFIG_HAVE_SETUP_PER_CPU_AREA archs use
dynamic percpu allocator. The first chunk is allocated using
embedding helper and 8k is reserved for modules. This ensures that
the new allocator behaves almost identically to the original allocator
as long as static percpu variables are concerned, so it shouldn't
introduce much breakage.

s390 and alpha use custom SHIFT_PERCPU_PTR() to work around addressing
range limit the addressing model imposes. Unfortunately, this breaks
if the address is specified using a variable, so for now, the two
archs aren't converted.

The following architectures are affected by this change.

* sh
* arm
* cris
* mips
* sparc(32)
* blackfin
* avr32
* parisc (broken, under investigation)
* m32r
* powerpc(32)

As this change makes the dynamic allocator the default one,
CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_PER_CPU_AREA is replaced with its invert -
CONFIG_HAVE_LEGACY_PER_CPU_AREA, which is added to yet-to-be converted
archs. These archs implement their own setup_per_cpu_areas() and the
conversion is not trivial.

* powerpc(64)
* sparc(64)
* ia64
* alpha
* s390

Boot and batch alloc/free tests on x86_32 with debug code (x86_32
doesn't use default first chunk initialization). Compile tested on
sparc(32), powerpc(32), arm and alpha.

Kyle McMartin reported that this change breaks parisc. The problem is
still under investigation and he is okay with pushing this patch
forward and fixing parisc later.

71e308a239 function-graph: add stack frame test
In case gcc does something funny with the stack frames, or the return
from function code, we would like to detect that.

An arch may implement passing of a variable that is unique to the
function and can be saved on entering a function and can be tested
when exiting the function. Usually the frame pointer can be used for
this purpose.

This patch also implements this for x86. Where it passes in the stack
frame of the parent function, and will test that frame on exit.

There was a case in x86_32 with optimize for size (-Os) where, for a
few functions, gcc would align the stack frame and place a copy of the
return address into it. The function graph tracer modified the copy and
not the actual return address. On return from the funtion, it did not go
to the tracer hook, but returned to the parent. This broke the function
graph tracer, because the return of the parent (where gcc did not do
this funky manipulation) returned to the location that the child function
was suppose to. This caused strange kernel crashes.

This test detected the problem and pointed out where the issue was.

This modifies the parameters of one of the functions that the arch
specific code calls, so it includes changes to arch code to accommodate
the new prototype.

Note, I notice that the parsic arch implements its own push_return_trace.
This is now a generic function and the ftrace_push_return_trace should be
used instead. This patch does not touch that code.

ea149b36c7 x86, mce: add basic error injection infrastructure
Allow user programs to write mce records into /dev/mcelog. When they do
that a fake machine check is triggered to test the machine check code.

This uses the MCE MSR wrappers added earlier.

The implementation is straight forward. There is a struct mce record
per CPU and the MCE MSR accesses get data from there if there is valid
data injected there. This allows to test the machine check code
relatively realistically because only the lowest layer of hardware
access is intercepted.

4efc0670ba x86, mce: use 64bit machine check code on 32bit
The 64bit machine check code is in many ways much better than
the 32bit machine check code: it is more specification compliant,
is cleaner, only has a single code base versus one per CPU,
has better infrastructure for recovery, has a cleaner way to communicate
with user space etc. etc.

Use the 64bit code for 32bit too.

This is the second attempt to do this. There was one a couple of years
ago to unify this code for 32bit and 64bit. Back then this ran into some
trouble with K7s and was reverted.

I believe this time the K7 problems (and some others) are addressed.
I went over the old handlers and was very careful to retain
all quirks.

But of course this needs a lot of testing on old systems. On newer
64bit capable systems I don't expect much problems because they have been
already tested with the 64bit kernel.

I made this a CONFIG for now that still allows to select the old
machine check code. This is mostly to make testing easier,
if someone runs into a problem we can ask them to try
with the CONFIG switched.

The new code is default y for more coverage.

Once there is confidence the 64bit code works well on older hardware
too the CONFIG_X86_OLD_MCE and the associated code can be easily
removed.

This causes a behaviour change for 32bit installations. They now
have to install the mcelog package to be able to log
corrected machine checks.

The 64bit machine check code only handles CPUs which support the
standard Intel machine check architecture described in the IA32 SDM.
The 32bit code has special support for some older CPUs which
have non standard machine check architectures, in particular
WinChip C3 and Intel P5. I made those a separate CONFIG option
and kept them for now. The WinChip variant could be probably
removed without too much pain, it doesn't really do anything
interesting. P5 is also disabled by default (like it
was before) because many motherboards have it miswired, but
according to Alan Cox a few embedded setups use that one.

Forward ported/heavily changed version of old patch, original patch
included review/fixes from Thomas Gleixner, Bert Wesarg.

b4ecc12699 x86: Fix performance regression caused by paravirt_ops on native kernels
Xiaohui Xin and some other folks at Intel have been looking into what's
behind the performance hit of paravirt_ops when running native.

It appears that the hit is entirely due to the paravirtualized
spinlocks introduced by:

 | commit 8efcbab674
 | Date: Mon Jul 7 12:07:51 2008 -0700
 |
 | paravirt: introduce a "lock-byte" spinlock implementation

The extra call/return in the spinlock path is somehow
causing an increase in the cycles/instruction of somewhere around 2-7%
(seems to vary quite a lot from test to test). The working theory is
that the CPU's pipeline is getting upset about the
call->call->locked-op->return->return, and seems to be failing to
speculate (though I haven't seen anything definitive about the precise
reasons). This doesn't entirely make sense, because the performance
hit is also visible on unlock and other operations which don't involve
locked instructions. But spinlock operations clearly swamp all the
other pvops operations, even though I can't imagine that they're
nearly as common (there's only a .05% increase in instructions
executed).

If I disable just the pv-spinlock calls, my tests show that pvops is
identical to non-pvops performance on native (my measurements show that
it is actually about .1% faster, but Xiaohui shows a .05% slowdown).

Summary of results, averaging 10 runs of the "mmperf" test, using a
no-pvops build as baseline:

		nopv Pv-nospin	Pv-spin
CPU cycles	100.00% 99.89% 102.18%
instructions	100.00% 100.10% 100.15%
CPI 100.00% 99.79% 102.03%
cache ref	100.00% 100.84% 100.28%
cache miss	100.00% 90.47% 88.56%
cache miss rate	100.00% 89.72% 88.31%
branches	100.00% 99.93% 100.04%
branch miss	100.00% 103.66% 107.72%
branch miss rt	100.00% 103.73% 107.67%
wallclock	100.00% 99.90% 102.20%

The clear effect here is that the 2% increase in CPI is
directly reflected in the final wallclock time.

(The other interesting effect is that the more ops are
out of line calls via pvops, the lower the cache access
and miss rates. Not too surprising, but it suggests that
the non-pvops kernel is over-inlined. On the flipside,
the branch misses go up correspondingly...)

So, what's the fix?

Paravirt patching turns all the pvops calls into direct calls, so
_spin_lock etc do end up having direct calls. For example, the compiler
generated code for paravirtualized _spin_lock is:

<_spin_lock+0>: mov %gs:0xb4c8,%rax
<_spin_lock+9>: incl 0xffffffffffffe044(%rax)
<_spin_lock+15>:	callq *0xffffffff805a5b30
<_spin_lock+22>:	retq

The indirect call will get patched to:
<_spin_lock+0>: mov %gs:0xb4c8,%rax
<_spin_lock+9>: incl 0xffffffffffffe044(%rax)
<_spin_lock+15>:	callq <__ticket_spin_lock>
<_spin_lock+20>:	nop; nop /* or whatever 2-byte nop */
<_spin_lock+22>:	retq

One possibility is to inline _spin_lock, etc, when building an
optimised kernel (ie, when there's no spinlock/preempt
instrumentation/debugging enabled). That will remove the outer
call/return pair, returning the instruction stream to a single
call/return, which will presumably execute the same as the non-pvops
case. The downsides arel 1) it will replicate the
preempt_disable/enable code at eack lock/unlock callsite; this code is
fairly small, but not nothing; and 2) the spinlock definitions are
already a very heavily tangled mass of #ifdefs and other preprocessor
magic, and making any changes will be non-trivial.

The other obvious answer is to disable pv-spinlocks. Making them a
separate config option is fairly easy, and it would be trivial to
enable them only when Xen is enabled (as the only non-default user).
But it doesn't really address the common case of a distro build which
is going to have Xen support enabled, and leaves the open question of
whether the native performance cost of pv-spinlocks is worth the
performance improvement on a loaded Xen system (10% saving of overall
system CPU when guests block rather than spin). Still it is a
reasonable short-term workaround.

Default CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START and CONFIG_PHYSICAL_ALIGN each to 16 MB,

appears to be the only way to do this that does not break some some

We want to avoid the bottom 16 MB because of large page breakup,
memory holes, and ZONE_DMA. Embedded systems may need to reduce this,

output and realize that they're basially exactly the same except for
trivial naming differences, and the fact that the 64-bit version has a
"pgtable" thing.

So unify them.

There's some trivial cleanup there (make the output format a Kconfig thing
rather than doing #ifdef's for it, and unify both 32-bit and 64-bit BSS
end to "_ebss", where 32-bit used to use the traditional "_end"), but
other than that it's really very mindless and straigt conversion.

For example, I think we should aim to remove "startup_32" vs "startup_64",
and just call it "startup", and get rid of one more difference. I didn't
do that.

Also, notice the comment in the unified vmlinux.lds.S talks about
"head_64" and "startup_32" which is an odd and incorrect mix, but that was
actually what the old 64-bit only lds file had, so the confusion isn't
new, and now that mixing is arguably more accurate thanks to the
vmlinux.lds.S file being shared between the two cases ;)

f7d7f866ba x86, intel-iommu: fix X2APIC && !ACPI build failure
This build failure:

| drivers/pci/dmar.c:47: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘dmar_tbl_size’
| drivers/pci/dmar.c:62: warning: ‘struct acpi_dmar_device_scope’ declared inside parameter list
| drivers/pci/dmar.c:62: warning: its scope is only this definition or declaration, which is probably not what you want

Triggers due to this commit:

  d0b03bd: x2apic/intr-remap: decouple interrupt remapping from x2apic

Which exposed a pre-existing but dormant fragility of the 'select X86_X2APIC'
it moved around and turned that fragility into a build failure.

Replace it with a proper 'depends on' construct.

6a11f75b6a generic debug pagealloc
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and
s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by
filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and
verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages().

This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but
invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and
invalid write access can be detected after a long delay.

b276268631 x86, mce, cmci: factor out threshold interrupt handler
Impact: cleanup; preparation for feature

The mce_amd_64 code has an own private MC threshold vector with an own
interrupt handler. Since Intel needs a similar handler
it makes sense to share the vector because both can not
be active at the same time.

I factored the common APIC handler code into a separate file which can
be used by both the Intel or AMD MC code.

This is needed for the next patch which adds an Intel specific
CMCI handler.

This patch should be a nop for AMD, it just moves some code
around.

c132937556 bootmem: clean up arch-specific bootmem wrapping
Impact: cleaner and consistent bootmem wrapping

By setting CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_BOOTMEM_NODE, archs can define
arch-specific wrappers for bootmem allocation. However, this is done
a bit strangely in that only the high level convenience macros can be
changed while lower level, but still exported, interface functions
can't be wrapped. This not only is messy but also leads to strange
situation where alloc_bootmem() does what the arch wants it to do but
the equivalent __alloc_bootmem() call doesn't although they should be
able to be used interchangeably.

This patch updates bootmem such that archs can override / wrap the
backend function - alloc_bootmem_core() instead of the highlevel
interface functions to allow simpler and consistent wrapping. Also,
HAVE_ARCH_BOOTMEM_NODE is renamed to HAVE_ARCH_BOOTMEM.

965c7ecaf2 x86: remove the Voyager 32-bit subarch
Impact: remove unused/broken code

The Voyager subarch last built successfully on the v2.6.26 kernel
and has been stale since then and does not build on the v2.6.27,
v2.6.28 and v2.6.29-rc5 kernels.

No actual users beyond the maintainer reported this breakage.
Patches were sent and most of the fixes were accepted but the
discussion around how to do a few remaining issues cleanly
fizzled out with no resolution and the code remained broken.

In the v2.6.30 x86 tree development cycle 32-bit subarch support
has been reworked and removed - and the Voyager code, beyond the
build problems already known, needs serious and significant
changes and probably a rewrite to support it.

CONFIG_X86_VOYAGER has been marked BROKEN then. The maintainer has
been notified but no patches have been sent so far to fix it.

While all other subarchs have been converted to the new scheme,
voyager is still broken. We'd prefer to receive patches which
clean up the current situation in a constructive way, but even in
case of removal there is no obstacle to add that support back
after the issues have been sorted out in a mutually acceptable
fashion.

So remove this inactive code for now.

c5c606d9dc x86: cleanup, rename CONFIG_X86_NON_STANDARD to CONFIG_X86_EXTENDED_PLATFORM
Patch to rename the CONFIG_X86_NON_STANDARD to CONFIG_X86_EXTENDED_PLATFORM.

The new name represents the subarches better. Also, default this to 'y'
so that many of the sub architectures that were not easily visible now
become visible.

Also re-organize the extended architecture platform and non standard
platform list alphabetically as suggested by Ingo.

60a5317ff0 x86: implement x86_32 stack protector
Impact: stack protector for x86_32

Implement stack protector for x86_32. GDT entry 28 is used for it.
It's set to point to stack_canary-20 and have the length of 24 bytes.
CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR turns off CONFIG_X86_32_LAZY_GS and sets %gs
to the stack canary segment on entry. As %gs is otherwise unused by
the kernel, the canary can be anywhere. It's defined as a percpu
variable.

x86_32 exception handlers take register frame on stack directly as
struct pt_regs. With -fstack-protector turned on, gcc copies the
whole structure after the stack canary and (of course) doesn't copy
back on return thus losing all changed. For now, -fno-stack-protector
is added to all files which contain those functions. We definitely
need something better.

ccbeed3a05 x86: make lazy %gs optional on x86_32
Impact: pt_regs changed, lazy gs handling made optional, add slight
overhead to SAVE_ALL, simplifies error_code path a bit

On x86_32, %gs hasn't been used by kernel and handled lazily. pt_regs
doesn't have place for it and gs is saved/loaded only when necessary.
In preparation for stack protector support, this patch makes lazy %gs
handling optional by doing the followings.

* Add CONFIG_X86_32_LAZY_GS and place for gs in pt_regs.

* Save and restore %gs along with other registers in entry_32.S unless
LAZY_GS. Note that this unfortunately adds "pushl $0" on SAVE_ALL
even when LAZY_GS. However, it adds no overhead to common exit path
and simplifies entry path with error code.

* Define different user_gs accessors depending on LAZY_GS and add
lazy_save_gs() and lazy_load_gs() which are noop if !LAZY_GS. The
lazy_*_gs() ops are used to save, load and clear %gs lazily.

* Define ELF_CORE_COPY_KERNEL_REGS() which always read %gs directly.

xen and lguest changes need to be verified.

9a5fd90227 ftrace: change function graph tracer to use new in_nmi
The function graph tracer piggy backed onto the dynamic ftracer
to use the in_nmi custom code for dynamic tracing. The problem
was (as Andrew Morton pointed out) it really only wanted to bail
out if the context of the current CPU was in NMI context. But the
dynamic ftrace in_nmi custom code was true if _any_ CPU happened
to be in NMI context.

Now that we have a generic in_nmi interface, this patch changes
the function graph code to use it instead of the dynamic ftarce
custom code.

78d904b46a ring-buffer: add NMI protection for spinlocks
Impact: prevent deadlock in NMI

The ring buffers are not yet totally lockless with writing to
the buffer. When a writer crosses a page, it grabs a per cpu spinlock
to protect against a reader. The spinlocks taken by a writer are not
to protect against other writers, since a writer can only write to
its own per cpu buffer. The spinlocks protect against readers that
can touch any cpu buffer. The writers are made to be reentrant
with the spinlocks disabling interrupts.

The problem arises when an NMI writes to the buffer, and that write
crosses a page boundary. If it grabs a spinlock, it can be racing
with another writer (since disabling interrupts does not protect
against NMIs) or with a reader on the same CPU. Luckily, most of the
users are not reentrant and protects against this issue. But if a
user of the ring buffer becomes reentrant (which is what the ring
buffers do allow), if the NMI also writes to the ring buffer then
we risk the chance of a deadlock.

This patch moves the ftrace_nmi_enter called by nmi_enter() to the
ring buffer code. It replaces the current ftrace_nmi_enter that is
used by arch specific code to arch_ftrace_nmi_enter and updates
the Kconfig to handle it.

When an NMI is called, it will set a per cpu variable in the ring buffer
code and will clear it when the NMI exits. If a write to the ring buffer
crosses page boundaries inside an NMI, a trylock is used on the spin
lock instead. If the spinlock fails to be acquired, then the entry
is discarded.

This bug appeared in the ftrace work in the RT tree, where event tracing
is reentrant. This workaround solved the deadlocks that appeared there.

0cd5c3c80a x86: disable intel_iommu support by default
Due to recurring issues with DMAR support on certain platforms.
There's a number of filesystem corruption incidents reported:

  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=479996
  http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12578

Provide a Kconfig option to change whether it is enabled by
default.

If disabled, it can still be reenabled by passing intel_iommu=on to the
kernel. Keep the .config option off by default.
