f45e4656ac [PATCH] arch/i386/kernel/microcode.c: remove the obsolete microcode_ioctl
Nowadays, even Debian stable ships a microcode_ctl utility recent enough to no
longer use this ioctl.

1e9f28fa1e [PATCH] sched: new sched domain for representing multi-core
Add a new sched domain for representing multi-core with shared caches
between cores. Consider a dual package system, each package containing two
cores and with last level cache shared between cores with in a package. If
there are two runnable processes, with this appended patch those two
processes will be scheduled on different packages.

On such systems, with this patch we have observed 8% perf improvement with
specJBB(2 warehouse) benchmark and 35% improvement with CFP2000 rate(with 2
users).

This new domain will come into play only on multi-core systems with shared
caches. On other systems, this sched domain will be removed by domain
degeneration code. This new domain can be also used for implementing power
savings policy (see OLS 2005 CMP kernel scheduler paper for more details..
I will post another patch for power savings policy soon)

Most of the arch/* file changes are for cpu_coregroup_map() implementation.

487472bc01 [PATCH] i386: Replace broken serialize_cpu in microcode driver with correct sync_core
Passing random input values in eax to cpuid is not a good idea
because the CPU will GPF for unknown ones.
Use the correct x86-64 version that exists for a longer time too.
This also adds a memory barrier to prevent the optimizer from
reordering.

3f98bc4991 [PATCH] i386/x86-64: Update AMD CPUID flags
Print bits for RDTSCP, SVM, CR8-LEGACY.

Also now print power flags on i386 like x86-64 always did.
This will add a new line in the 386 cpuinfo, but that shouldn't
be an issue - did that in the past too and I haven't heard
of any breakage.

I shrunk some of the fields in the i386 cpuinfo_x86 to chars
to make up for the new int "x86_power" field. Overall it's
smaller than before.

94605eff57 [PATCH] x86-64/i386: Intel HT, Multi core detection fixes
Fields obtained through cpuid vector 0x1(ebx[16:23]) and
vector 0x4(eax[14:25], eax[26:31]) indicate the maximum values and might not
always be the same as what is available and what OS sees. So make sure
"siblings" and "cpu cores" values in /proc/cpuinfo reflect the values as seen
by OS instead of what cpuid instruction says. This will also fix the buggy BIOS
cases (for example where cpuid on a single core cpu says there are "2" siblings,
even when HT is disabled in the BIOS.

a520112930 [PATCH] x86: make IOPL explicit
The pushf/popf in switch_to are ONLY used to switch IOPL. Making this
explicit in C code is more clear. This pushf/popf pair was added as a
bugfix for leaking IOPL to unprivileged processes when using
sysenter/sysexit based system calls (sysexit does not restore flags).

When requesting an IOPL change in sys_iopl(), it is just as easy to change
the current flags and the flags in the stack image (in case an IRET is
required), but there is no reason to force an IRET if we came in from the
SYSENTER path.

This change is the minimal solution for supporting a paravirtualized Linux
kernel that allows user processes to run with I/O privilege. Other
solutions require radical rewrites of part of the low level fault / system
call handling code, or do not fully support sysenter based system calls.

Unfortunately, this added one field to the thread_struct. But as a bonus,
on P4, the fastest time measured for switch_to() went from 312 to 260
cycles, a win of about 17% in the fast case through this performance
critical path.

245067d167 [PATCH] i386: cleanup serialize msr
i386 arch cleanup. Introduce the serialize macro to serialize processor
state. Why the microcode update needs it I am not quite sure, since wrmsr()
is already a serializing instruction, but it is a microcode update, so I will
keep the semantic the same, since this could be a timing workaround. As far
as I can tell, this has always been there since the original microcode update
source.

4bb0d3ec3e [PATCH] i386: inline asm cleanup
i386 Inline asm cleanup. Use cr/dr accessor functions.

Also, a potential bugfix. Also, some CR accessors really should be volatile.
Reads from CR0 (numeric state may change in an exception handler), writes to
CR4 (flipping CR4.TSD) and reads from CR2 (page fault) prevent instruction
re-ordering. I did not add memory clobber to CR3 / CR4 / CR0 updates, as it
was not there to begin with, and in no case should kernel memory be clobbered,
except when doing a TLB flush, which already has memory clobber.

I noticed that page invalidation does not have a memory clobber. I can't find
a bug as a result, but there is definitely a potential for a bug here:

#define __flush_tlb_single(addr) \
	__asm__ __volatile__("invlpg %0": :"m" (*(char *) addr))

12aaa0855b [PATCH] i386 / desc_empty macro is incorrect
Chuck Ebbert noticed that the desc_empty macro is incorrect. Fix it.

Thankfully, this is not used as a security check, but it can falsely
overwrite TLS segments with carefully chosen base / limits. I do not
believe this is an issue in practice, but it is a kernel bug.

3b520b238e [PATCH] MTRR suspend/resume cleanup
There has been some discuss about solving the SMP MTRR suspend/resume
breakage, but I didn't find a patch for it. This is an intent for it. The
basic idea is moving mtrr initializing into cpu_identify for all APs (so it
works for cpu hotplug). For BP, restore_processor_state is responsible for
restoring MTRR.

3dd9d51484 [PATCH] x86_64: add support for Intel dual-core detection and displaying
Appended patch adds the support for Intel dual-core detection and displaying
the core related information in /proc/cpuinfo.

It adds two new fields "core id" and "cpu cores" to x86 /proc/cpuinfo and the
"core id" field for x86_64("cpu cores" field is already present in x86_64).

Number of processor cores in a die is detected using cpuid(4) and this is
documented in IA-32 Intel Architecture Software Developer's Manual (vol 2a)

This patch also adds cpu_core_map similar to cpu_sibling_map.

ecd02dddd1 [PATCH] i386: Use loaddebug macro consistently
This moves the macro loaddebug from asm-i386/suspend.h to
asm-i386/processor.h, which is the place that makes sense for it to be
defined, removes the extra copy of the same macro in
arch/i386/kernel/process.c, and makes arch/i386/kernel/signal.c use the
macro in place of its expansion.

This is a purely cosmetic cleanup for the normal i386 kernel. However, it
is handy for Xen to be able to just redefine the loaddebug macro once
instead of also changing the signal.c code.

1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
