c80cfb0406 vsprintf: use new vsprintf symbolic function pointer format
Use the '%pF' format to get rid of an "#ifdef DEBUG" and make some printks
atomic.

This removes the last in-tree uses of print_fn_descriptor_symbol(). I
marked print_fn_descriptor_symbol() deprecated and scheduled it for
removal next year to give time for out-of-tree modules to be updated.

parisc's print_fn_descriptor_symbol() is currently broken there (it needs
to dereference the function pointer similar to ia64 and power). This
patch shouldn't make anything worse, but it means we need to fix
dereference_function_descriptor() instead of print_fn_descriptor_symbol()
to get meaningful initcall_debug output.

99178b036c Driver core: add bus_sort_breadthfirst() function
The PCI core wants to reorder the devices in the bus list. So move this
functionality out of the pci core and into the driver core so that
anyone else can also do this if needed. This also lets us change how
struct device is attached to drivers in the future without messing with
the PCI core.

030c1d2bfc kobject: Fix kobject_rename and !CONFIG_SYSFS
When looking at kobject_rename I found two bugs with
that exist when sysfs support is disabled in the kernel.

kobject_rename does not change the name on the kobject when
sysfs support is not compiled in.

kobject_rename without locking attempts to check the
validity of a rename operation, which the kobject layer
simply does not have the infrastructure to do.

This patch documents the previously unstated requirement of
kobject_rename that is the responsibility of the caller to
provide mutual exclusion and to be certain that the new_name
for the kobject is valid.

This patch modifies sysfs_rename_dir in !CONFIG_SYSFS case
to call kobject_set_name to actually change the kobject_name.

This patch removes the bogus and misleading check in kobject_rename
that attempts to see if a rename is valid. The check is bogus
because we do not have the proper locking. The check is misleading
because it looks like we can and do perform checking at the kobject
level that we don't.

728f08934b debug: use dev_WARN() rather than WARN_ON() in device_pm_add()
device_pm_add() has a WARN_ON that is showing relatively high on
kerneloops.org, but unfortunately the WARN_ON is less than useful
in that it doesn't print any information about what device is causing
the issue.

This patch fixes this by turning the WARN_ON() into the newly
introduces dev_WARN() which will print information about the
device in question.

6cd4958609 device model: Do a quickcheck for driver binding before doing an expensive check
This patch adds a quick check for the driver<->device match before
taking the locks and doin gthe expensive checks. Taking the lock hurts
in asynchronous boot context where the device lock gets hit; one of the
init functions takes the lock and goes to do an expensive hardware init;
the other init functions walk the same PCI list and get stuck on the
lock as a result.

For the common case, we can know there's no chance whatsoever of a match
if the device isn't in the drivers ID table... so this patch does that
check as a best-effort-avoid-the-lock approach.

Bootcharts for before and after can be seen at
http://www.fenrus.org/before.svg
http://www.fenrus.org/after.svg

Note the long time "agp_ali_init" takes in the first graph; my laptop
doesn't even have an ALI chip in it! (the bootgraphs look a bit
dissimilar, but that's the point, the first one has a bunch of arbitrary
delays in it that cause it to look very different)

This reduces my kernel boot time by about 20%

5a3ceb8616 driver-core: use klist for class device list and implement iterator
Iterating over entries using callback usually isn't too fun especially
when the entry being iterated over can't be manipulated freely. This
patch converts class->p->class_devices to klist and implements class
device iterator so that the users can freely build their own control
structure. The users are also free to call back into class code
without worrying about locking.

class_for_each_device() and class_find_device() are converted to use
the new iterators, so their users don't have to worry about locking
anymore either.

Note: This depends on klist-dont-iterate-over-deleted-entries patch
because class_intf->add/remove_dev() depends on proper synchronization
with device removal.

3b98aeaf3a PM: don't skip device PM init when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP isn't set and CONFIG_PM is set
This patch (as1124) fixes a couple of bugs in the PM core. The new
dev->power.status field should be initialized regardless of whether
CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is enabled, and similarly dpm_sysfs_add() should be
called whenever CONFIG_PM is enabled.

The patch separates out the call to dpm_sysfs_add() from the call to
device_pm_add(). As a result device_pm_add() can no longer return an
error, so its return type is changed to void.

00412be1d7 isa: set 24-bit dma_mask for ISA devices
dma_alloc_coherent() on x86 currently takes a passed in NULL device
pointer to mean that it should allocate an ISA compatible (24-bit) buffer
which is a bit of a hack.

The ALSA ISA drivers are the main consumers of this but have a struct
device in fact readily available.

For the legacy drivers, this sets the device dma_mask in preparation for
using the actual device with the DMA API so as to eventually not need the
NULL hack in dma_alloc_coherent().

This does not fix a current bug -- 2.6.26-rc1 stumbled over the NULL hack
in dma_alloc_coherent() but this has already been fixed in commit
4a367f3a9d by Takashi Iwai.

5c755e9fd8 memory-hotplug: add sysfs removable attribute for hotplug memory remove
Memory may be hot-removed on a per-memory-block basis, particularly on
POWER where the SPARSEMEM section size often matches the memory-block
size. A user-level agent must be able to identify which sections of
memory are likely to be removable before attempting the potentially
expensive operation. This patch adds a file called "removable" to the
memory directory in sysfs to help such an agent. In this patch, a memory
block is considered removable if;

o It contains only MOVABLE pageblocks
o It contains only pageblocks with free pages regardless of pageblock type

On the other hand, a memory block starting with a PageReserved() page will
never be considered removable. Without this patch, the user-agent is
forced to choose a memory block to remove randomly.

Sample output of the sysfs files:

./memory/memory0/removable: 0
./memory/memory1/removable: 0

4a0b2b4dbe sysdev: Pass the attribute to the low level sysdev show/store function

I need this for the dynamically generated bank attributes in the x86

d9b19199e4 always enable FW_LOADER unless EMBEDDED=y
James Bottomley recently discovered that we have
{request,release}_firmware() dummies for the case of the actual
functions not being available and has a fix for the bug that was
actually causing build errors for built-in users with
CONFIG_FW_LOADER=m.

But now missing selects on FW_LOADER are no longer visible at
compile-time at all and can become runtime problems.

FW_LOADER is infrastructure with relatively small codesize we can safely
enable for everyone, and only for people who really need small kernels
(and can be expected to know what they are doing) it matters being able
to disable it.

This patch therefore always sets FW_LOADER=y and allows users only to
disable it with EMBEDDED=y.

As a bonus, we can then get rid of all "select FW_LOADER" plus the due
to it required "depends on HOTPLUG" which removes some complexity from
our Kconfig files.

838ea8e8db sysdev: fix debugging statements in registration code.
The systdev_class_register() and sysdev_register() functions have
pr_debug() statements which are enabled when the user selects the
driver core debug. Both of these routines do not produce the
correct output, as they make assumptions about data which has not
been initialised.

In sysdev_class_register() the code uses the kobject_name(&cls->kset.kobj)
at the start of the function, but this is not setup until later in the
same call. Change this to use cls->name which is passed in from the caller.

The sysdev_register() function tries to get the name of the sysdev by
kobject_name(&sysdev->kobj), but that isn't setup until later in the same
function so change this message to use the name of the sysdev's class and
add another message once the name is initialised.

e105b8bfc7 sysfs: add /sys/dev/{char,block} to lookup sysfs path by major:minor
Why?:
There are occasions where userspace would like to access sysfs
attributes for a device but it may not know how sysfs has named the
device or the path. For example what is the sysfs path for
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3160827AS_5MT004CK? With this change a call to
stat(2) returns the major:minor then userspace can see that
/sys/dev/block/8:32 links to /sys/block/sdc.

What are the alternatives?:
1/ Add an ioctl to return the path: Doable, but sysfs is meant to reduce
   the need to proliferate ioctl interfaces into the kernel, so this
   seems counter productive.

2/ Use udev to create these symlinks: Also doable, but it adds a
   udev dependency to utilities that might be running in a limited
   environment like an initramfs.

3/ Do a full-tree search of sysfs.

5658c76944 firmware: allow firmware files to be built into kernel image
Some drivers have their own hacks to bypass the kernel's firmware loader
and build their firmware into the kernel; this renders those unnecessary.

Other drivers don't use the firmware loader at all, because they always
want the firmware to be available. This allows them to start using the
firmware loader.

A third set of drivers already use the firmware loader, but can't be
used without help from userspace, which sometimes requires an initrd.
This allows them to work in a static kernel.

23ca4bba3e x86: cleanup early per cpu variables/accesses v4
* Introduce a new PER_CPU macro called "EARLY_PER_CPU". This is
    used by some per_cpu variables that are initialized and accessed
    before there are per_cpu areas allocated.

    ["Early" in respect to per_cpu variables is "earlier than the per_cpu
    areas have been setup".]

    This patchset adds these new macros:

	DEFINE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name, _initvalue)
	EXPORT_EARLY_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(_name)
	DECLARE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name)

	early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)
	early_per_cpu_map(_name, _idx)
	early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu)

    The DEFINE macro defines the per_cpu variable as well as the early
    map and pointer. It also initializes the per_cpu variable and map
    elements to "_initvalue". The early_* macros provide access to
    the initial map (usually setup during system init) and the early
    pointer. This pointer is initialized to point to the early map
    but is then NULL'ed when the actual per_cpu areas are setup. After
    that the per_cpu variable is the correct access to the variable.

    The early_per_cpu() macro is not very efficient but does show how to
    access the variable if you have a function that can be called both
    "early" and "late". It tests the early ptr to be NULL, and if not
    then it's still valid. Otherwise, the per_cpu variable is used
    instead:

	#define early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu) 			\
		(early_per_cpu_ptr(_name) ?			\
			early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)[_cpu] :	\
			per_cpu(_name, _cpu))

    A better method is to actually check the pointer manually. In the
    case below, numa_set_node can be called both "early" and "late":

	void __cpuinit numa_set_node(int cpu, int node)
	{
	    int *cpu_to_node_map = early_per_cpu_ptr(x86_cpu_to_node_map);

	    if (cpu_to_node_map)
		    cpu_to_node_map[cpu] = node;
	    else
		    per_cpu(x86_cpu_to_node_map, cpu) = node;
	}

  * Add a flag "arch_provides_topology_pointers" that indicates pointers
    to topology cpumask_t maps are available. Otherwise, use the function
    returning the cpumask_t value. This is useful if cpumask_t set size
    is very large to avoid copying data on to/off of the stack.

  * The coverage of CONFIG_DEBUG_PER_CPU_MAPS has been increased while
    the non-debug case has been optimized a bit.

  * Remove an unreferenced compiler warning in drivers/base/topology.c

  * Clean up #ifdef in setup.c

eb9d0fe40e PCI ACPI: Rework PCI handling of wake-up
* Introduce function acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake() for enabling and
  disabling the system wake-up capability of devices that are power
  manageable by ACPI.

* Introduce function acpi_bus_can_wakeup() allowing other (dependent)
  subsystems to check if ACPI is able to enable the system wake-up
  capability of given device.

* Introduce callback .sleep_wake() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
  for the ACPI PCI 'driver' make it use acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake().

* Introduce callback .can_wakeup() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
  for the ACPI 'driver' make it use acpi_bus_can_wakeup().

* Move the PME# handlig code out of pci_enable_wake() and split it
  into two functions, pci_pme_capable() and pci_pme_active(),
  allowing the caller to check if given device is capable of
  generating PME# from given power state and to enable/disable the
  device's PME# functionality, respectively.

* Modify pci_enable_wake() to use the new ACPI callbacks and the new
  PME#-related functions.

* Drop the generic .platform_enable_wakeup() callback that is not
  used any more.

* Introduce device_set_wakeup_capable() that will set the
  power.can_wakeup flag of given device.

* Rework PCI device PM initialization so that, if given device is
  capable of generating wake-up events, either natively through the
  PME# mechanism, or with the help of the platform, its
  power.can_wakeup flag is set and its power.should_wakeup flag is
  unset as appropriate.

* Make ACPI set the power.can_wakeup flag for devices found to be
  wake-up capable by it.

* Make the ACPI wake-up code enable/disable GPEs for devices that
  have the wakeup.flags.prepared flag set (which means that their
  wake-up power has been enabled).

c50cbb05a0 cpu topology: always define CPU topology information
This can result in an empty topology directory in sysfs, and requires
in-kernel users to protect all uses with #ifdef - see
<http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdev&m=120639033904472&w=2>.

The documentation of CPU topology specifies what the defaults should be if
only partial information is available from the hardware. So we can
provide these defaults as a fallback.

This patch:

- Adds default definitions of the 4 topology macros to <linux/topology.h>
- Changes drivers/base/topology.c to use the topology macros unconditionally
  and to cope with definitions that aren't lvalues
- Updates documentation accordingly

d8f3de0d24 Suspend-related patches for 2.6.27
ACPI PM: Add possibility to change suspend sequence

There are some systems out there that don't work correctly with
our current suspend/hibernation code ordering. Provide a workaround
for these systems allowing them to pass 'acpi_sleep=old_ordering' in
the kernel command line so that it will use the pre-ACPI 2.0 ("old")
suspend code ordering.

Unfortunately, this requires us to add a platform hook to the
resuming of devices for recovering the platform in case one of the
device drivers' .suspend() routines returns error code. Namely,
ACPI 1.0 specifies that _PTS should be called before suspending
devices, but _WAK still should be called before resuming them in
order to undo the changes made by _PTS. However, if there is an
error during suspending devices, they are automatically resumed
without returning control to the PM core, so the _WAK has to be
called from within device_resume() in that cases.

The patch also reorders and refactors the ACPI suspend/hibernation
code to avoid duplication as far as reasonably possible.

1eede070a5 Introduce new top level suspend and hibernation callbacks
Introduce 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' ('ext' meaning
'extended') representing suspend and hibernation operations for bus
types, device classes, device types and device drivers.

Modify the PM core to use 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops'
objects, if defined, instead of the ->suspend(), ->resume(),
->suspend_late(), and ->resume_early() callbacks (the old callbacks
will be considered as legacy and gradually phased out).

The main purpose of doing this is to separate suspend (aka S2RAM and
standby) callbacks from hibernation callbacks in such a way that the
new callbacks won't take arguments and the semantics of each of them
will be clearly specified. This has been requested for multiple
times by many people, including Linus himself, and the reason is that
within the current scheme if ->resume() is called, for example, it's
difficult to say why it's been called (ie. is it a resume from RAM or
from hibernation or a suspend/hibernation failure etc.?).

The second purpose is to make the suspend/hibernation callbacks more
flexible so that device drivers can handle more than they can within
the current scheme. For example, some drivers may need to prevent
new children of the device from being registered before their
->suspend() callbacks are executed or they may want to carry out some
operations requiring the availability of some other devices, not
directly bound via the parent-child relationship, in order to prepare
for the execution of ->suspend(), etc.

Ultimately, we'd like to stop using the freezing of tasks for suspend
and therefore the drivers' suspend/hibernation code will have to take
care of the handling of the user space during suspend/hibernation.
That, in turn, would be difficult within the current scheme, without
the new ->prepare() and ->complete() callbacks.

8882b39421 Driver core: add device_create_vargs and device_create_drvdata
We want to have the drvdata field set properly when creating the device
as sysfs callbacks can assume it is present and it can race the later
setting of this field.

So, create two new functions, deviec_create_vargs() and
device_create_drvdata() that take this new field.

device_create_drvdata() will go away in 2.6.27 as the drvdata field will
just be moved to the device_create() call as it should be.

0599ad53fe sysfs: remove error messages for -EEXIST case
It is possible that the entry in sysfs already exists, one case of this is
when a network device is renamed to bonding_masters. Anyway, in this case
the proper error path is for device_rename to return an error code, not to
generate bogus backtrace and errors.

Also, to avoid possible races, the create link should be done before the
remove link. This makes a device rename atomic operation like other renames.

fc3ba692a4 mm: Add NR_WRITEBACK_TEMP counter
Fuse will use temporary buffers to write back dirty data from memory mappings
(normal writes are done synchronously). This is needed, because there cannot
be any guarantee about the time in which a write will complete.

By using temporary buffers, from the MM's point if view the page is written
back immediately. If the writeout was due to memory pressure, this
effectively migrates data from a full zone to a less full zone.

This patch adds a new counter (NR_WRITEBACK_TEMP) for the number of pages used
as temporary buffers.

b844eba292 PM: Remove destroy_suspended_device()
After 2.6.24 there was a plan to make the PM core acquire all device
semaphores during a suspend/hibernation to protect itself from
concurrent operations involving device objects. That proved to be
too heavy-handed and we found a better way to achieve the goal, but
before it happened, we had introduced the functions
device_pm_schedule_removal() and destroy_suspended_device() to allow
drivers to "safely" destroy a suspended device and we had adapted some
drivers to use them. Now that these functions are no longer necessary,
it seems reasonable to remove them and modify their users to use the
normal device unregistration instead.

d288e47c47 PM: Make wakeup flags available whenever CONFIG_PM is set
The various wakeup flags and their accessor macros in struct
dev_pm_info should be available whenever CONFIG_PM is enabled, not
just when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is on. Otherwise remote wakeup won't always
be configurable for runtime power management. This patch (as1056b)
fixes the oversight.

David Brownell adds:
	More accurately, fixes the "regression" ... as noted sometime
	last summer, after 296699de6b

58aca23226 PM: Handle device registrations during suspend/resume
Modify the PM core to protect its data structures, specifically the
dpm_active list, from being corrupted if a child of the currently
suspending device is registered concurrently with its ->suspend()
callback. In that case, since the new device (the child) is added
to dpm_active after its parent, the PM core will attempt to
suspend it after the parent, which is wrong.

Introduce a new member of struct dev_pm_info, called 'sleeping',
and use it to check if the parent of the device being added to
dpm_active has been suspended, in which case the device registration
fails. Also, use 'sleeping' for checking if the ordering of devices
on dpm_active is correct.

Introduce variable 'all_sleeping' that will be set to 'true' once all
devices have been suspended and make new device registrations fail
until 'all_sleeping' is reset to 'false', in order to avoid having
unsuspended devices around while the system is going into a sleep state.

Remove pm_sleep_rwsem which is not necessary any more.

2f3edc6936 [SCSI] transport_class: BUG if we can't release the attribute container
Every current transport class calls transport_container_release but
ignores the return value. This is catastrophic if it returns an error
because the containers are part of a global list and the next action of
almost every transport class is to free the memory used by the
container.

Fix this by making transport_container_release a void, but making it BUG
if attribute_container_release returns an error ... this catches the
root cause of a system panic much earlier. If we don't do this, we get
an eventual BUG when the attribute container list notices the corruption
caused by the freed memory it's still referencing.

Also made attribute_container_release __must_check as a reminder.

d478376cb0 driver core: fix small mem leak in driver_add_kobj()
The Coverity checker spotted that we leak the storage allocated to 'name' in
int driver_add_kobj(). The leak looks legit to me - this is the code :

int driver_add_kobj(struct device_driver *drv, struct kobject *kobj,
                    const char *fmt, ...)
{
        va_list args;
        char *name;
        int ret;

        va_start(args, fmt);
        name = kvasprintf(GFP_KERNEL, fmt, args);
        ^^^^^^^^ This dynamically allocates space...

        va_end(args);

        if (!name)
                return -ENOMEM;

        return kobject_add(kobj, &drv->p->kobj, "%s", name);
	^^^^^^^^ This neglects to free the space allocated
}

Inside kobject_add() a copy of 'name' will be made and used. As far as I can
see, Coverity is correct in flagging this as a leak, but I'd like some
configmation before the patch is applied.

This should fix it.

e88a0c2ca8 drivers: fix dma_get_required_mask
There's a bug in the current implementation of dma_get_required_mask()
where it ands the returned mask with the current device mask. This
rather defeats the purpose if you're using the call to determine what
your mask should be (since you will at that time have the default
DMA_32BIT_MASK). This bug results in any driver that uses this function
*always* getting a 32 bit mask, which is wrong.

Fix by removing the and with dev->dma_mask.

da231fd5d1 Driver core: fix class glue dir cleanup logic
We should remove the glue directory between the class and the bus
device _after_ we sent out the 'remove' event for the device, otherwise
the parent relationship is no longer valid, and composing the path
with deleted sysfs entries will not work.

ef2c51746d Driver core: fix race in __device_release_driver
This patch (as1013) was suggested by David Woodhouse; it fixes a race
in the driver core. If a device is unregistered at the same time as
its driver is unloaded, the driver's code pages may be unmapped while
the remove method is still running. The calls to get_driver() and
put_driver() were intended to prevent this, but they don't work if the
driver's module count has already dropped to 0.

Instead, the patch keeps the device on the driver's list until after
the remove method has returned. This forces the necessary
synchronization to occur.

c8e90d822b Kobject: change drivers/base/bus to use kobject_init_and_add
Stop using kobject_register, as this way we can control the sending of
the uevent properly, after everything is properly initialized.

7dc72b2842 Driver core: clean up debugging messages
The driver core debugging messages are a mess. This provides a unified
message that makes them actually useful.

The format for new kobject debug messages should be:
	driver/bus/class: 'OBJECT_NAME': FUNCTION_NAME: message.\n

Note, the class code is not changed in this patch due to pending patches
in my queue that this would conflict with. A later patch will clean
them up.

e5dd127846 Driver core: move the static kobject out of struct driver
This patch removes the kobject, and a few other driver-core-only fields
out of struct driver and into the driver core only. Now drivers can be
safely create on the stack or statically (like they currently are.)
