8c2676a587 [PATCH] hot-add-mem x86_64: memory_add_physaddr_to_nid node fixup
In cases where the acpi memory-add event does not containe the pxm (node)
infomation allow the driver to look up node info based on the address. The
acpi_get_node call returns -1 if it can't decode the pxm info, this causes
add_memory to panic. acpi_get_node would have to decode the resource from the
handle (a lenghty proposition). This seems to be the cleanist point to
interject the hook.

4942e998b4 [PATCH] hot-add-mem x86_64: memory_add_physaddr_to_nid enable
The api for hot-add memory already has a construct for finding nodes based on
an address, memory_add_physaddr_to_nid. This patch allows the fucntion to do
something besides return 0. It uses the nodes_add infomation to lookup to
node info for a hot add event.

0e0b864e06 [PATCH] Account for memmap and optionally the kernel image as holes
The x86_64 code accounted for memmap and some portions of the the DMA zone as
holes. This was because those areas would never be reclaimed and accounting
for them as memory affects min watermarks. This patch will account for the
memmap as a memory hole. Architectures may optionally use set_dma_reserve()
if they wish to account for a portion of memory in ZONE_DMA as a hole.

776ed98b84 [PATCH] reduce MAX_NR_ZONES: remove two strange uses of MAX_NR_ZONES
I keep seeing zones on various platforms that are never used and wonder why we
compile support for them into the kernel. Counters show up for HIGHMEM and
DMA32 that are alway zero.

This patch allows the removal of ZONE_DMA32 for non x86_64 architectures and
it will get rid of ZONE_HIGHMEM for arches not using highmem (like 64 bit
architectures). If an arch does not define CONFIG_HIGHMEM then ZONE_HIGHMEM
will not be defined. Similarly if an arch does not define CONFIG_ZONE_DMA32
then ZONE_DMA32 will not be defined.

No current architecture uses all the 4 zones (DMA,DMA32,NORMAL,HIGH) that we
have now. The patchset will reduce the number of zones for all platforms.

On many platforms that do not have DMA32 or HIGHMEM this will reduce the
number of zones by 50%. F.e. ia64 only uses DMA and NORMAL.

Large amounts of memory can be saved for larger systemss that may have a few
hundred NUMA nodes.

With ZONE_DMA32 and ZONE_HIGHMEM support optional MAX_NR_ZONES will be 2 for
many non i386 platforms and even for i386 without CONFIG_HIGHMEM set.

Tested on ia64, x86_64 and on i386 with and without highmem.

The patchset consists of 11 patches that are following this message.

One could go even further than this patchset and also make ZONE_DMA optional
because some platforms do not need a separate DMA zone and can do DMA to all
of memory. This could reduce MAX_NR_ZONES to 1. Such a patchset will
hopefully follow soon.

This patch:

Fix strange uses of MAX_NR_ZONES

Sometimes we use MAX_NR_ZONES - x to refer to a zone. Make that explicit.

caff0710eb [PATCH] initialize end of memory variables as early as possible
While an earlier patch already did a small step into that direction,
this patch moves initialization of all memory end variables to as
early as possible, so that dependent code doesn't need to check

Also, remove a misleading (perhaps just outdated) comment, and make
static a variable only used in a single file.

bc02af93dd [PATCH] pgdat allocation for new node add (specify node id)
Change the name of old add_memory() to arch_add_memory. And use node id to

Note: Powerpc's old add_memory() is defined as __devinit. However,

0dc243ae10 [PATCH] x86_64: Calgary IOMMU - IOMMU abstractions
This patch creates a new interface for IOMMUs by adding a centralized
location for IOMMU allocation (for translation tables/apertures) and
IOMMU initialization. In creating these, code was moved around for
abstraction, uniformity, and consiceness.

Take note of the move of the iommu_setup bootarg parsing code to
__setup. This is enabled by moving back the location of the aperture
allocation/detection to mem init (which while ugly, was already the
location of the swiotlb_init).

While a slight departure from the previous patch, I belive this provides
the true intention of the previous versions of the patch which changed
this code. It also makes the addition of the upcoming calgary code much
cleaner than previous patches.

[AK: Removed one broken change. iommu_setup still has to be called
early]

d167a51877 [PATCH] x86_64: x86_64 version of the smp alternative patch.
Changes are largely identical to the i386 version:

 * alternative #define are moved to the new alternative.h file.
 * one new elf section with pointers to the lock prefixes which can be
   nop'ed out for non-smp.
 * two new elf sections simliar to the "classic" alternatives to
replace SMP code with simpler UP code.
 * fixup headers to use alternative.h instead of defining their own
   LOCK / LOCK_PREFIX macros.

The patch reuses the i386 version of the alternatives code to avoid code
duplication. The code in alternatives.c was shuffled around a bit to
reduce the number of #ifdefs needed. It also got some tweaks needed for
x86_64 (vsyscall page handling) and new features (noreplacement option
which was x86_64 only up to now). Debug printk's are changed from
compile-time to runtime.

68a3a7feb0 [PATCH] x86_64: Reserve SRAT hotadd memory on x86-64
From: Keith Mannthey, Andi Kleen

Implement memory hotadd without sparsemem. The memory in the SRAT
hotadd area is just preserved instead and can be activated later.

There are a few restrictions:
- Only one continuous hotadd area allowed per node

The main problem is dealing with the many buggy SRAT tables
that are out there. The strategy here is to reject anything
suspicious.

Originally from Keith Mannthey, with several hacks and changes by AK
and also contributions from Andrew Morton

[ TBD: Problems pointed out by KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki <kamezawa.hiroyu@jp.fujitsu.com>:

 1) Goto's rebuild_zonelist patch will not work if CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG=n.

Rebuilding zonelist is necessary when the system has just memory <
4G at boot, and hot add memory > 4G. because x86_64 has DMA32,
ZONE_NORAML is not included into zonelist at boot time if system
doesn't have memory >4G at boot.

[AK: should just force the higher zones at boot time when SRAT tells us]

 2) zone and node's spanned_pages and present_pages are not incremented.
    They should be.

For example, our server (ia64/Fujitsu PrimeQuest) can equip memory
from 4G to 1T(maybe 2T in future), and SRAT will *always* say we have
possible 1T +memory. (Microsoft requires "write all possible memory
in SRAT") When we reserve memmap for possible 1T memory, Linux will
not work well in +minimum 4G configuraion ;)

[AK: needs limiting to 5-10% of max memory]

17a941d854 [PATCH] x86_64: Use function pointers to call DMA mapping functions
AK: I hacked Muli's original patch a lot and there were a lot
of changes - all bugs are probably to blame on me now.
There were also some changes in the fall back behaviour
for swiotlb - in particular it doesn't try to use GFP_DMA
now anymore. Also all DMA mapping operations use the
same core dma_alloc_coherent code with proper fallbacks now.
And various other changes and cleanups.

Known problems: iommu=force swiotlb=force together breaks
                needs more testing.

This patch cleans up x86_64's DMA mapping dispatching code. Right now
we have three possible IOMMU types: AGP GART, swiotlb and nommu, and
in the future we will also have Xen's x86_64 swiotlb and other HW
IOMMUs for x86_64. In order to support all of them cleanly, this
patch:

- introduces a struct dma_mapping_ops with function pointers for each
of the DMA mapping operations of gart (AMD HW IOMMU), swiotlb
(software IOMMU) and nommu (no IOMMU).

- gets rid of:

  if (swiotlb)
      return swiotlb_xxx();

- PCI_DMA_BUS_IS_PHYS is now checked against the dma_ops being set
This makes swiotlb faster by avoiding double copying in some cases.

576fc0978b [PATCH] x86_64: Fix incorrect node_present_pages on NUMA
Currently, we do not pass the correct start_pfn to e820_hole_size, to
calculate holes. Following patch fixes that.

The bug results in incorrect number of node_present_pages for each pgdat
and causes ugly output in /sys and probably VM inbalances.

9e43e1b7c7 [PATCH] x86_64: Remove CONFIG_CHECKING and add command line option for pagefault tracing
CONFIG_CHECKING covered some debugging code used in the early times
of the port. But it wasn't even SMP safe for quite some time
and the bugs it checked for seem to be gone.

This patch removes all the code to verify GS at kernel entry. There
haven't been any new bugs in this area for a long time.

Previously it also covered the sysctl for the page fault tracing.
That didn't make much sense because that code was unconditionally
compiled in. I made that a boot option now because it is typically
only useful at boot.

f6c2e3330d [PATCH] x86_64: Unmap NULL during early bootup
We should zap the low mappings, as soon as possible, so that we can catch
kernel bugs more effectively. Previously early boot had NULL mapped
and didn't trap on NULL references.

This patch introduces boot_level4_pgt, which will always have low identity
addresses mapped. Druing boot, all the processors will use this as their
level4 pgt. On BP, we will switch to init_level4_pgt as soon as we enter C
code and zap the low mappings as soon as we are done with the usage of
identity low mapped addresses. On AP's we will zap the low mappings as
soon as we jump to C code.

e18c6874a5 [PATCH] x86_64: Account mem_map in VM holes accounting
The VM needs to know about lost memory in zones to accurately
balance dirty pages. This patch accounts mem_map in there too,
which fixes a constant errror of a few percent. Also some
other misc mappings and the kernel text itself are accounted
too.

a2f1b42490 [PATCH] x86_64: Add 4GB DMA32 zone
Add a new 4GB GFP_DMA32 zone between the GFP_DMA and GFP_NORMAL zones.

As a bit of historical background: when the x86-64 port
was originally designed we had some discussion if we should
use a 16MB DMA zone like i386 or a 4GB DMA zone like IA64 or
both. Both was ruled out at this point because it was in early
2.4 when VM is still quite shakey and had bad troubles even
dealing with one DMA zone. We settled on the 16MB DMA zone mainly
because we worried about older soundcards and the floppy.

But this has always caused problems since then because
device drivers had trouble getting enough DMA able memory. These days
the VM works much better and the wide use of NUMA has proven
it can deal with many zones successfully.

So this patch adds both zones.

This helps drivers who need a lot of memory below 4GB because
their hardware is not accessing more (graphic drivers - proprietary
and free ones, video frame buffer drivers, sound drivers etc.).
Previously they could only use IOMMU+16MB GFP_DMA, which
was not enough memory.

Another common problem is that hardware who has full memory
addressing for >4GB misses it for some control structures in memory
(like transmit rings or other metadata). They tended to allocate memory
in the 16MB GFP_DMA or the IOMMU/swiotlb then using pci_alloc_consistent,
but that can tie up a lot of precious 16MB GFPDMA/IOMMU/swiotlb memory
(even on AMD systems the IOMMU tends to be quite small) especially if you have
many devices. With the new zone pci_alloc_consistent can just put
this stuff into memory below 4GB which works better.

One argument was still if the zone should be 4GB or 2GB. The main
motivation for 2GB would be an unnamed not so unpopular hardware
raid controller (mostly found in older machines from a particular four letter
company) who has a strange 2GB restriction in firmware. But
that one works ok with swiotlb/IOMMU anyways, so it doesn't really
need GFP_DMA32. I chose 4GB to be compatible with IA64 and because
it seems to be the most common restriction.

The new zone is so far added only for x86-64.

For other architectures who don't set up this
new zone nothing changes. Architectures can set a compatibility
define in Kconfig CONFIG_DMA_IS_DMA32 that will define GFP_DMA32
as GFP_DMA. Otherwise it's a nop because on 32bit architectures
it's normally not needed because GFP_NORMAL (=0) is DMA able
enough.

One problem is still that GFP_DMA means different things on different
architectures. e.g. some drivers used to have #ifdef ia64 use GFP_DMA
(trusting it to be 4GB) #elif __x86_64__ (use other hacks like
the swiotlb because 16MB is not enough) ... . This was quite
ugly and is now obsolete.

These should be now converted to use GFP_DMA32 unconditionally. I haven't done
this yet. Or best only use pci_alloc_consistent/dma_alloc_coherent
which will use GFP_DMA32 transparently.

485761bd6a [PATCH] x86_64: Tell VM about holes in nodes
Some nodes can have large holes on x86-64.

This fixes problems with the VM allowing too many dirty pages because it
overestimates the number of available RAM in a node. In extreme cases you
can end up with all RAM filled with dirty pages which can lead to deadlocks
and other nasty behaviour.

This patch just tells the VM about the known holes from e820. Reserved
(like the kernel text or mem_map) is still not taken into account, but that
should be only a few percent error now.

Small detail is that the flat setup uses the NUMA free_area_init_node() now
too because it offers more flexibility.

2b97690f4c [PATCH] reorganize x86-64 NUMA and DISCONTIGMEM config options
In order to use the alternative sparsemem implmentation for NUMA kernels,
we need to reorganize the config options. This patch effectively abstracts
out the CONFIG_DISCONTIGMEM options to CONFIG_NUMA in most cases. Thus,
the discontigmem implementation may be employed as always, but the
sparsemem implementation may be used alternatively.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
